Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird. Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. “No Scrubs” by TLC. What do all these things have in common? They were all inspiration for the award-winning, first-time feature, Peck.
Peck is a period piece set in the early 20th century. It’s a coming of age drama comedy about a woman learning independence. She forms important relationships to nature and to the women around her. The story was created by Antoinette Lavalle, who brought me in to finish out the script together. We spent months meeting up, drinking tea and speaking in a British dialect in front of my laptop.
In the summer of 2022, we received Produce Iowa’s Greenlight Grant to produce the project and set off on principal photography in the fall. In March of 2024, the final film premiered at a sold-out Varsity Theater in Des Moines.
Apart from other various roles, I designed at all points of the production, beginning with the pitch deck, which served as an aid to the grant writing process. Above all, I felt it was important for me at that juncture to emphasize the “feminine” power behind the project. Antoinette led a mostly female and non-binary cast and crew for Peck.
